Removal and disposal of asbestos and eternit*
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASBESTOS AND ETERNIT? LET'S CLEAR
Even today, some people mistakenly use the term 'Eternit as a synonym for asbestos. In fact, Eternit is a registered trademark of the Etex company, which once produced the well-known modular roofing systems that contained asbestos mixed with cement. The laws' provisions that, first of all, obliged the removal of roofs containing asbestos, have probably produced the incorrect association of the two terms.
WHY WAS ASBESTOS USED?
Asbestos is a product of mineral origin, used for the production of a large variety of products for civil and industrial use. Since it hinders the transmission of thermal energy, protects from flames and is chemically resistant to acids, asbestos has found application in numerous civil and industrial sectors. It has been used in many production sectors such as for example in construction in the form of slabs, tiles, flocked on walls and ceilings, etc. or as a thermal insulator.
THE HARMFULNESS OF ASBESTOS
Thanks to many medical-scientific and diagnostic studies given by the observation of cases of serious pathologies affecting operators working the mineral, it has been discovered that asbestos has the ability to be reduced into very small elements and to mix in the air. The transformation into 'breathable' microelements that penetrate the deepest parts of the respiratory system of those who come into contact with them, causes the organism to react. However, the immune system is unable to expel or process the asbestos microfibers, generating a cyclical inflammatory reaction that could lead to cancerous formations.
ASBESTOS IS AN OUTLAW PRODUCT
Precisely because of its harmfulness, asbestos was outlawed in 1992. In Italy its extraction, processing, import and, above all, its use is prohibited.
